TASK: Work in groups to collaboratively create a presentation to the class about the history, geography, culture and influence of the Indigenous people in the Amazon. The Amazon is the world’s greatest rainforest. It is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet and about 200,000 indigenous people. Those in the remote areas are self- sufficient and live traditionally as hunter-gatherers. But today almost no forest Amerindians live in their fully traditional ways and increasingly impacted by modern development. Each student in the group will play an integral role. The Anthropologist: This person will research and provide examples and information on a few societies living in the Amazon. What are their beliefs? Class structure? How do they live? What do they eat? The Sociologist: This person will examine how their lives are being changed by modern influences. Do they continue to practice traditions from the past? What modern practices and technologies have they adopted? How have their lives been changed? What will be their future? The Ecologist This person is the expert on the rainforest, home to the indigenous people for thousands of years. Report on the flora and fauna of the Amazon. Provide statistics and information on the geography of the rainforest ie. size, climate, etc The Environmentalist This person is concerned about the continued destruction of the rainforest and will research and report on why it is disappearing. What are the development pressures? Why is the Amazon so important to the health of the planet? What is being done to protect the rainforest? The Tourism Expert What opportunities for tourism exist in the rainforest? This person will report on examples of eco tourism and Amazon River cruises. Are indigenous groups involved? Are they benefiting from tourism? You will use the book resources and suggested web sites for research.
